Tim Knight, the new publisher of Newsday, spoke at this morning's LIMBA meeting. His focus was on the changes at Newsday around rebuilding trust after the circulation scandal of last year. Tim spoke a lot about changing the culture of Newsday to restore faith in the paper both internally and externally. He touched on reaching out to the communities of readers and advertisers, becoming more receptive and adaptive to both their needs. He repeatedly used the words aloof and arrogant, in terms of eliminating those traits from the corporate culture there.
He also spoke about the upcoming labor negotiations, and getting them squared away so that the paper can focus on the evolving marketplace.
A lot of the questions were centered around what a future paper would look and feel like, given the changing nature of video and audio consumption. Rather than focusing on keeping people looking at ink on paper, he addressed the questions in terms of being ready to and working on methods to stay connected to readers, listners, or watchers in whatever media they prefer to consume.
Again a very interesting LIMBA morning with a great speaker.
