We start the Summer 2006 season announcing a major expansion of the Fire Island Wireless network. There are three new locations and roaming to the UrbanHotspots network for Fire Island Wireless users.
- Surfside 3 in Lindenhurst, our first Long Island outpost, you can sign up in the 400 slip marina here, and use your account across the bay at any of our locations.
- The Fire Island Ferries terminal in Bay Shore. While you're waiting for the boat across, you can get online with your Fire Island Wireless account.
- Cherry Grove. Our access point is on top of The Belvedere Guest House for Men, covering the Grove with our service.
- Roaming to Urban Hotspots. Your Fire Island Wireless account or prepaid card gets you access to the Urban Hotspots footprint in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Long Island, so you can surf at the beach and in the city.

If you can see one of these signals with your laptop, you can sign on by connecting to the network, opening a web browser and signing up for an account when you see our splash page. If you can't see our signal, or get it strongly enough to pickup an IP address or get consistent performance, then you need a better connection to us. This can be done several ways. The least expensive is to get an external USB adapter with a directional antenna like this one from Wireless Network Products. The next option is to have an outdoor ethernet bridge mounted on your house, and a CAT5 wire run from that bridge down to where you want your computer or wireless router to be. From there, you can plug in your computer. For us to do that for you is $299.00, $100.00 less expensive than last year. If you're a do-it-yourselfer, you can buy one of these from Wireless Network Products, install it yourself ( ask us which side of your house or how high a mast is best, based on your location ) and configure it to pickup one of the signals listed above.
If you're at an UrbanHotspots location, choose either the Fire Island Wireless Credit Card customers radio button, or the Prepaid Card button, depending on what type your account is, and you can get online in the big town.
