Recipe for Success: Teens, Caffeine, and a Worthy Cause
Can nine middle-and high school kids compete against 10,000 MBAs in Lower Manhattan ? At the Teen Entrepreneur Boot Camp they can! This group of teens is launching an espresso bar this summer in the South Street Seaport.
“Roast Ashore,” featuring hot and iced espresso drinks, along with specialty drinks like the unique Maté Splash (a signature South American green tea with a twist), will open for two (2) days – August 6th and 7th – at 159 John Street, on the corner of Front Street, across from the TKTS Tickets Box Office. But, unlike Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts, this temporary business is being built from the ground up by the teens in just two weeks. And this is coffee with a cause: All profits from Roast Ashore will be donated to charity.
From as far away as Brooklyn, Queens, and Connecticut, the group has come together to write a business plan, develop a marketing strategy (including this press release!), create a budget, then staff and manage the coffee bar themselves. In just the first day, they have already coined the name “Roast Ashore, ”designed their own logo, and have begun reaching out to local media and community leaders.
“We’d all like to buy new shoes,” says Taylor Banning, 15, a member of the group, “but supporting worthy causes is more important.” Ashlie Dekkers, 16, adds, “We’re going to benefit, too. Learning how to organize a business and get it off the ground will help us later in our careers. I want to start my own business someday.”
In addition to the high-end espresso drinks, “Roast Ashore” will offer iced coffee and fresh-brewed exotic iced teas like Rooibos, a naturally decaffeinated red tea from South Africa . For those with a sweet tooth, you can sample treats like the Green Tea Lemon Cookie, a unique Chai Latte cookie, and homemade Peanut Butter Cups.
So, local business people, tourists, and Downtown residents of all ages should come by the South Street Seaport and check out Roast Ashore. “Rest assured,” it will be the best coffee in town.
Roast Ashore is a program of the Teen Entrepreneur Boot Camp, a start-up non-profit located in New York City . The non-profit is a public service project of Klatch , a popular coffee bar located on Maiden Lane in Lower Manhattan .
